Advertiser account and verification
Account creation, business details, Persona verification, billing profile and payment method, plus team invites — with country, currency and time zone set correctly, because none of the three can be changed later.
ChatGPT Ads is the first genuinely new intent surface since paid search. People do not type three keywords into ChatGPT — they describe a situation, weigh options and ask follow-up questions. That changes what a good ad looks like, and almost everything you know about match types stops applying. I build these campaigns the way I build a Google Ads account: structured, measured, and honest about what a beta channel can and cannot tell you yet.
These are OpenAI’s own published platform details, not campaign results. ChatGPT Ads launched in 2026 and remains in beta — anyone quoting you guaranteed returns on it is guessing. I would rather show you the constraints first.
Three things decide whether a ChatGPT Ads account works: the context you describe to the system, how much genuine creative variety you feed it, and whether your landing page is even reachable by OpenAI’s crawlers.
The structure will look familiar — campaign, ad group, ad — but the levers underneath are different. A campaign holds your objective, budget, dates and country targeting. An ad group holds a maximum bid and, crucially, your context hints: short descriptions of the conversations, topics or keywords where your offer is genuinely useful.
Hints are not keywords. They guide matching, they do not guarantee delivery in any specific conversation, and there are no match types to hide behind. So the work moves upstream: understanding the situations your customers are actually in when they open ChatGPT, and describing those situations accurately rather than stuffing a list of product names.
There is one ad format: advertiser name, logo, a title, a line of copy, a square image and a landing page. The title runs 16–24 characters as a recommendation and 50 at the absolute maximum; the copy 32–48 recommended and 100 maximum. You get no carousel, no video, no landscape crop. Everything therefore rests on how many genuinely distinct angles you give the system to find opportunities with.
The quiet killer is access. Landing pages must not block OpenAI’s user agents, OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot. A great many sites added blanket AI-crawler blocks to robots.txt over the past two years and will fail ad review without ever understanding why. Checking that is part of the technical SEO work I run before anything goes live.
Everything below is built inside your own advertiser account, under your login.
Account creation, business details, Persona verification, billing profile and payment method, plus team invites — with country, currency and time zone set correctly, because none of the three can be changed later.
A documented map of the conversations and decision moments where your offer is genuinely useful, clustered into ad groups and written in the language your customers actually use.
Many distinct title and copy angles per offering, written to the recommended character bands so nothing truncates, each one introducing a different reason to care rather than restating the last.
On-brand square creatives produced to OpenAI’s spec and hosted at stable public URLs, plus the account logo and favicon that appear in every ad unit.
Conversion measurement configured in Ads Manager Beta and a consistent UTM scheme on every destination URL, so ChatGPT traffic is readable in GA4 and your CRM independently of the platform’s own numbers.
A pre-launch check that OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot can reach your landing pages, that destinations resolve, and that creative and claims sit inside OpenAI’s ads policies before review rather than after rejection.
One account owner creates the advertiser account at ads.openai.com, enters business and account details, and completes verification through Persona. Review sits in a rolling queue, so this starts first — duplicate applications do not speed it up and only confuse which account is real.
Before a rupee is committed, we work out the conversations your buyers are actually having: the comparisons, the objections, the moments just before a decision. Those become ad group themes and the context hints inside them.
Titles, copy and square images are produced at volume with real angle variety, destinations are matched to each promise, UTMs are applied, and crawler access is verified. Campaigns are then submitted for review.
Contained budgets, bids opened in OpenAI’s recommended range, and daily checks on serving status. Any ad marked “Not serving” gets diagnosed immediately — most causes are fixable edits rather than policy rejections.
Impressions, clicks and CTR surface within minutes; spend reporting lags, so a displayed zero never gets treated as free. Budget moves toward the hint clusters producing qualified enquiries, and only once cost per qualified lead holds.
Where this channel genuinely differs — and where it is still behind.

ChatGPT Ads run beside your existing paid channels
Your ad budget is paid directly to OpenAI. The advertiser account, billing profile and every conversion action are created under your ownership and stay with you.
ChatGPT Ads has existed for months, not years. Here is how I think about it.
Every few years a channel arrives that people rush into on the strength of novelty alone, and the ones who do well are usually the ones who set it up properly and waited. ChatGPT Ads is genuinely interesting: people arrive mid-decision, with far richer context than a search box ever captured. It is also a beta with one creative format, no keyword control, an audience limited to the free tier, and reporting that is still maturing. Both things are true at once. So I will build you a clean account, give the system real creative variety, measure it independently of the platform’s own dashboard, and tell you plainly whether the enquiries were incremental. If they were not, I will say so.
Everything worth understanding before you approve a budget — sourced from OpenAI’s own documentation.
Ads render below ChatGPT’s response, clearly labelled and kept visually separate from the answer itself. Each unit carries the advertiser name, a favicon or logo, a title, a line of copy, an image and a landing page.
They are not shown to everyone. OpenAI does not serve ads to users on Plus, Pro or any Business plan, nor to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18. That is a real constraint: your reachable audience is the free tier. Enormous, but worth knowing before you model returns.
There is no keyword auction in the sense you are used to. The system weighs the context and intent of the current conversation, your landing page, your title and copy, the context hints you supplied at ad group level, and — where the user has ads personalisation enabled — selected signals from their broader ChatGPT experience.
Context hints deserve emphasis because they are the piece people misuse. They describe conversations, topics or keywords where your product may be relevant. They are not exact-match keywords and they do not guarantee delivery in any specific conversation. Treat them as a brief for a relevance engine, not as a targeting command.
Three objectives are available. Views buys impressions on a CPM basis. Clicks optimises for traffic on CPC. Conversions optimises toward a supported standard conversion event — and note that conversion-optimised campaigns using click billing (oCPC) still charge for valid clicks, not for conversions.
You set a maximum bid at ad group level: a maximum CPM for Reach campaigns or a maximum CPC for Clicks campaigns. OpenAI recommends opening CPC bids around $3–$5, and Ads Manager displays bid-strength guidance to flag bids likely to limit delivery. Selection runs through a relevance-weighted second-price auction, which is another way of saying that a more relevant ad can win at a lower bid — exactly as Quality Score behaves in Google Ads.
| Element | Recommended | Hard limit |
|---|---|---|
| Ad title | 16–24 characters | 50 characters |
| Ad copy | 32–48 characters | 100 characters |
| Image | Square, simple, on-message | PNG or JPG, max 1200×1200, publicly accessible URL |
| Landing page | Specific page, not the homepage | Valid, reachable, must not block OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot |
| Brand name & logo | Set once in account settings | Required — ads will not serve without them |
| Account ceiling | Structure for readable reporting | 5,000 campaigns, 5,000 ad groups, 5,000 ads |
Because the format is so constrained, the winning strategy is coverage rather than perfection. OpenAI’s own guidance is explicit about it: build a high volume of genuinely distinct title and copy variations per offering, each introducing a different angle, so the system has more chances to find a conversation where you fit. Benefit-focused copy that explains who the product is for and when it helps outperforms a clever line.
Ads Manager Beta supports two workflows. Guided creation walks you through campaign, ad group and ad step by step. Bulk upload takes a completed ad schema template — useful at scale, though it does not currently support product-feed campaigns. In the schema, context hints go in as a JSON array, campaign and ad group names must match exactly across tabs, and a partially successful upload is a genuine hazard: re-running rows that already succeeded creates duplicate ads. Retail advertisers have a third option, a product feed that generates ads from an uploaded catalogue.
Ads Manager Beta reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions, viewable in a table, as trend charts, or as a CSV export. Impressions, clicks and CTR can appear within minutes; spend reporting lags, so a displayed zero does not mean nothing has been charged.
Set up conversion measurement inside Ads Manager, and independently add UTM parameters to every destination URL — they persist on ad clicks, which lets GA4 and your CRM tell you what happened without relying on the platform marking its own homework. That second read is the one I care about, and it is the same discipline I apply to Meta Ads and LinkedIn.
Accounts go through verification, and campaigns go through ad review. An ad marked “Not serving” will show a reason on hover; many causes are ordinary edits, though some are policy rejections or unresolved billing and verification steps. On the other side, OpenAI states that it places ads only near conversations that are safe and brand-appropriate, with safeguards intended to keep ads out of sensitive contexts.
One practical warning worth repeating: the country, billing currency and time zone selected when you create an advertiser account cannot be changed later. Get them right, or you will be creating a second account.
My honest recommendation for most Indian businesses in 2026 is a contained test that runs alongside, not instead of, existing channels. Capture existing demand with Google Ads, build and retarget with Meta Ads, compound with SEO, follow up with WhatsApp and email automation — then use ChatGPT Ads to reach people mid-consideration, and measure whether those enquiries were genuinely incremental. If you want that whole picture planned together, that is what performance marketing is for.

ExploreChatGPT Ads are advertisements that appear below ChatGPT responses. Each ad unit contains the advertiser name, a favicon or logo, a title, a line of copy, an image and a landing page. OpenAI’s system selects ads using the context and intent of the current conversation, the ad’s landing page, title and copy, advertiser-provided context hints, and — where ads personalisation is enabled — selected signals from the user’s broader ChatGPT experience. Ads are clearly labelled and kept separate from ChatGPT’s own answers.
Yes. OpenAI opened self-serve access to Ads Manager in India in early September 2026, alongside Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, and its help centre now lists around 52 available markets. You create an advertiser account at ads.openai.com, complete business verification, add a billing profile and payment method, then build campaigns. Note that the country, currency and time zone chosen at account creation cannot be changed afterwards, so they need to be right the first time.
Not everyone. OpenAI does not show ads to users on Plus, Pro or any Business plan, or to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18. In practice ChatGPT Ads reaches the free tier — still an enormous audience, but a real constraint worth knowing before you budget.
There are no match types. At ad group level you provide context hints — short descriptions of the conversations, topics or keywords where your product may be relevant. They guide matching but are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee that your ad appears in any particular conversation. Beyond hints, your levers are country targeting and the quality and variety of your creative. If you need literal query-level control, that is still Google Ads.
You set a maximum bid at ad group level — maximum CPM for Reach campaigns or maximum CPC for Clicks campaigns — and OpenAI runs a relevance-weighted second-price auction. OpenAI’s documentation recommends opening CPC bids in the $3–$5 range, and Ads Manager shows bid-strength guidance so you can see whether a bid will limit delivery. My fee is separate and is never a percentage of your ad spend.
Ad title: 16–24 characters recommended, 50 maximum. Ad copy: 32–48 characters recommended, 100 maximum. Image: PNG or JPG, square, no larger than 1200×1200 pixels, at a publicly accessible URL. Landing page: valid, reachable and not blocking OpenAI’s crawlers. Brand name and logo come from account settings, and ads will not serve until those are complete.
It happens more often than you would think. Landing pages must not block OpenAI’s user agents, OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot. Many sites added blanket AI-crawler rules to robots.txt over the past two years and then cannot work out why ads fail review. Checking and fixing that is part of the technical SEO work I do before launch.
Not yet, and not wholesale. ChatGPT Ads is a beta product with a young reporting stack, one creative format and no keyword-level control. It is a genuine new intent surface and worth testing with a contained budget alongside your existing channels — not a replacement for a Google Ads account that is already producing qualified leads.
Two ways, and you should use both. Configure conversion measurement inside Ads Manager Beta, and add your own UTM parameters to every landing page URL — they persist on ad clicks, so GA4 and your CRM can attribute traffic independently. Ads Manager Beta reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. Impressions, clicks and CTR appear within minutes; spend lags, so a displayed zero does not mean nothing has been charged.
Account creation and verification support, billing setup, context hint research, a creative library with real angle variety, square image assets, conversion measurement and a UTM taxonomy, a crawler-access and landing page audit, then ongoing optimisation and reporting. The advertiser account is created under your ownership and stays with you. See the deliverables above or get in touch.
